Giovanni Bellini
Giovanni brought luminous art of saturated color influencing the various artists that came after him. He used this to convey messages to spectators and make the art more appealing to one’s eye. Three of his works that bring out the luminous colors were the Portrait of the Doge Leonardo Dona, Madonna and Child in Landscape, and Saint Jerome Reading. In the Portrait of the Doge Leonardo Dona, Bellini was able to blend the colors to create accurate aging effects on the Doge. His usage of the colors white and gold translate messages to audiences to show wealth, prosperity, and goodness. The next work of art that conveys the strategic usage of colors is the Madonna and Child in a Landscape. Giovanni Bellini created a great blend of colors to portray a bright appearance to the Virgin’s face contrasting from the background. The overall usage of light and color blends in the painting conveyed a more natural setting for the scene. The last painting he did that involved the usage of saturated colors was Saint Jerome Reading. Nature is depicted realistically mainly by the use of his color definition (1). The definition of color made Saint Jerome stand out more compared to his outside surroundings. Bellini also created a tunneling effect in this painting by the contrast of bright and dark colors.
