Gallery 1 - Titian

Born in 1488, Titian started off his young painting career by shadowing the efforts of artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione. In fact, Giovanni's passion for the sensuous use of color had a huge effect on the young Titian. These painters had a great impact on the production of Titian's work, but he quickly developed his own style.

The techniques employed by Titian in his artwork, particularly in the application and use of color, provided much inspiration to both his contemporaries of the Italian Renaissance as well future artists. In his early works an already obvious sensitivity to effects of space and color is visible, and Titian began exploring new themes and the constructive use of color.

Although during the course of his life Titian's artistic manner changed drastically, he still retained a primary interest in color. In his later years, Colors and textures almost melt into each other creating an atmospheric effect. His brushwork also became much more vibrant. His innovative technique of oil painting by freeing up brushstrokes and using color more expressively helped revolutionize the current art world.

Titian made his use of a color a key component in his art, which emphasized the meaning and mood of the paintings. Titian mastered color in order to tie all the elements of the painting into one and bring out true emotion in his work.

A few of his most distinct works are shown here.
