Gallery One: Religious Narrative Paintings
Patrons, often times religious groups and institutions (like churches and confraternities), desired art that depicted biblical stories, highlighting the life of Christ. In narrating these religious scenes, artists conveyed to the viewer the emotions of biblical figures. They created art that was a show, detailing the drama and passion of religious stories, while also underscoring the importance of devotion to Christianity. Artists and commissioners wanted to visually express the narrative of the Bible, offering the viewer a unique understanding of the intricacies of the stories that they have been listening to during Mass for all of their lives.
